Pulivendla lies in the Kadapa region of Andhra Pradesh, in the semi-arid interior known as Rayalaseema. The country around it is dry and open, with scattered rocky hills and farmland that depends on limited rainfall and irrigation. From above, the town is a compact centre of streets. Main roads lead out into a thinly settled landscape.
Pulivendla is widely known in Indian politics. It is the home town of the Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy family. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and his son Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy later held the same office. The assembly constituency of the same name has long been linked with them.
