Rūdarpur lies in eastern Uttar Pradesh, in the level, intensively farmed country of the middle Gangetic plain. Land like this produces a particular kind of map. There are no hills to steer the streets, so the town grows outwards from its older core in every direction, and roads leave it straight across the fields towards neighbouring villages and market centres.
From above, the centre appears as a dense, irregular cluster of lanes, typical of an old North Indian market town, with a few wider roads carrying traffic through. Towards the edges, buildings thin out and the pattern changes to scattered plots, ponds and field boundaries. Water tanks and small ponds are common features of this landscape and appear as quiet shapes between the streets.
