Ruidian lies in the mountains of far western Yunnan, close to China's border with Myanmar. This is steep, heavily forested terrain, cut by deep valleys and rivers flowing south. On a map, the settlement sits where the land allows, on a valley floor or gentler slope, with roads following the contours rather than any grid.
The region is known for its high mountains, rich forests and a mix of ethnic communities, and small towns like Ruidian serve as local centres for farming villages scattered across the slopes. Roads here are few and hard-won, and they appear on the map as long, looping lines tracing the valleys.
