Sankeshwar is a town in Belagavi district in northern Karnataka, close to the border with Maharashtra. It lies on the Hiranyakeshi River, and on the map the river's curve gives an otherwise compact town a clear, natural edge. The older streets gather near the water, and newer neighbourhoods spread out onto the open land around them.
The town is also on the main highway linking Belagavi with Kolhapur, and this road cuts a long, straight line across the map. That contrast between a winding river and a straight highway is the organising idea of a Sankeshwar map poster.
