Santana do Acaraú lies in the north of Ceará, Brazil, in the valley of the Acaraú river, inland from the Atlantic coast. The surrounding landscape is the semi-arid sertão, with scrubland, farms and seasonal watercourses, and the town is a small, concentrated area of streets within a very wide, open countryside.
From above, the town has a compact, mostly regular street plan, typical of towns in the Brazilian interior, with a central square and church at its heart and blocks spreading out from there. The river runs nearby, and its course and the greener land along its banks show clearly against the drier country around them.
