Shchëkino Map Poster & Print
Shchëkino is a town in Tula Oblast, a short distance south of Tula. Its map shows a planned grid of residential streets, a railway line and large industrial areas, typical of towns that grew rapidly in the Soviet period. Around it lie fields, woodland and smaller villages, connected by country roads.
The town developed with coal mining in the Moscow coal basin and later with chemical industry, and these activities left large footprints that remain visible on the map as broad, blank sites. The residential districts are more regular, with blocks of apartment buildings set along straight streets and small green spaces between them.
Shchëkino is best known to visitors as the district of Yasnaya Polyana, the estate of Leo Tolstoy, which lies between the town and Tula. A Shchëkino map poster can be framed to show the town itself, or widened to include the surrounding countryside that Tolstoy wrote about.
