Shiraguppi lies in the far south of Maharashtra, in the farming country of the Krishna river basin near the border with Karnataka. The land here is broad and fairly level, and the map shows it: a compact settlement at the centre, with roads leading out in several directions across a wide patchwork of fields.
This part of western India is heavily farmed, and sugarcane is a major crop across the region, watered by rivers and irrigation.
