Sochaczew is west of Warsaw, on the Bzura River. The river valley shapes the town: the historic centre sits on higher ground above the water, while the Bzura curves through open meadows below. On a bluff overlooking the river are the ruins of a castle, which marks the oldest part of the settlement.
Railway lines and main roads toward Warsaw and Łódź cross the town, and the newer residential districts spread over the flat land beyond. The Bzura name is familiar in Polish history: in September 1939, the largest battle of the German invasion was fought along this river.
