Somandepalle is a mandal headquarters in the Rayalaseema region of southern Andhra Pradesh, in the area formerly part of Anantapur district. The land here is a broad, dry upland, and from above the town appears as a modest core of streets at the meeting point of several roads, surrounded by a wide field of farmland, scattered hamlets and granite outcrops typical of the Deccan plateau.
This is a region shaped by low rainfall, so water is managed carefully. Irrigation tanks, small reservoirs held behind earthen bunds, appear on the map as irregular pale shapes among the fields, and they have been part of village life in Rayalaseema for generations. Agriculture, including groundnut, remains central to the local economy.
