Sumidouro lies in the mountainous interior of Rio de Janeiro state, in the region known as the Região Serrana. From above, the town is small and closely fitted to its setting. A handful of streets follow the valley floor and the river winding through it, while steep hillsides, part forest and part farmland, rise all around.
Agriculture shapes the surrounding map. The municipality is known for vegetable farming, and small plots and farm roads climb the slopes in irregular patterns. Rural communities are spread across the valleys beyond the town centre, linked by winding roads that trace the contours of the hills.
