Szigetszentmiklós lies on Csepel Island, the long island in the Danube that begins in southern Budapest and stretches far to the south. The town occupies the northern part of the island, just beyond the city limits, so water frames its map. The calm Ráckeve Danube arm runs along one side, and the main river flows past the island's western shore.
Within that setting, the town is mostly low-rise and residential. Older village streets surround the historic centre, and newer suburban grids have spread out from them as Budapest grew.
