Teruel stands on a raised plateau above the meeting of the Turia and Alfambra rivers, in the south of Aragon. The old town sits on the high ground, its streets compact and irregular, while newer districts spread across the valleys and the plains beyond. Viaducts and stairways connect the levels, and on the map these crossings appear as clear, deliberate lines.
The city is known for its Mudéjar architecture, including several towers recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage, and for the legend of the Lovers of Teruel. It is one of the smallest provincial capitals in Spain, which has given rise to the well-known phrase Teruel existe.
