Tettnang sits in the gentle hills north of Lake Constance, between Friedrichshafen and Ravensburg in southern Baden-Württemberg. The old town occupies a slight rise, and its main street and compact blocks lead toward the Neues Schloss, the baroque palace of the Counts of Montfort. Beyond the historic core, newer districts spread along the roads into the countryside.
That countryside is what made Tettnang famous. The area is one of the best-known hop-growing regions in the world, and brewers prize Tettnanger hops for their fine aroma. From above, hop gardens and fruit orchards form long parallel strips and neat rectangles, and the map picks up this agricultural geometry in the spaces between villages and farm roads.
