Thorapadi is a town in Tamil Nadu adjoining Vellore, part of the continuous built-up area that has grown around the old fort city. On a map it reads as a tight weave of lanes and short blocks, with a few main roads cutting through toward the city centre and the highways beyond. The pattern is dense, practical and irregular, shaped by gradual growth rather than a single plan.
The surrounding landscape is marked by bare granite hills, a familiar sight around Vellore, and by tanks and water channels that fill during the monsoon. Vellore itself is known for its sixteenth-century fort with a broad moat, and for the Christian Medical College, one of the best-known hospitals in India, which draws patients from across the country.
