Timbiras is a municipality in the interior of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil. Its name recalls the Timbira peoples, the Indigenous groups historically associated with this part of the country. The town sits in a landscape of rivers, palm groves and farmland, typical of the transition between the Amazon and the drier northeast.
From above, the urban area is compact and fairly regular, with a grid of streets laid out near the river and a few longer roads heading out towards neighbouring towns. The river and its bends give the map its most natural lines, while the town's blocks form a neat, geometric patch in the middle of open country.
