Unterschleißheim lies just north of Munich on the flat Munich gravel plain. From above, the town looks orderly and modern, with residential estates, business parks and schools arranged along a few clear axes. The S-Bahn line runs north–south through the town, and a motorway cuts along its edge, framing the built-up area in firm straight lines.
The town has grown substantially since the second half of the twentieth century, attracting technology companies and commuters who value the rail link to Munich. Next door, in Oberschleißheim, stands the Schleissheim palace complex with its long canals and formal gardens, and the flat landscape around includes heathland and lakes used for recreation.
