Ūttangarai is a town in Krishnagiri district in northern Tamil Nadu, serving as the centre of a largely agricultural area. On a map it appears as a compact core of streets around the main road junction, with irrigated fields, tanks and scattered villages spreading out in every direction.
The landscape of this part of Tamil Nadu is marked by granite outcrops and low hills rising out of the plain, so the roads leaving town bend around them on their way to neighbouring towns. Water tanks and small reservoirs show up clearly as irregular shapes among the fields.
