Vechta is a town in the Oldenburger Münsterland region of Lower Saxony, set on the flat, open North German plain. It was once a fortified town, and traces of its former citadel survive in the green spaces near the centre. From above, the old core forms a small, rounded knot of streets, surrounded by later residential districts and a web of roads heading out across farmland.
The town is home to the University of Vechta, and each August it hosts the Stoppelmarkt, one of the larger traditional fairs in northern Germany, held on open ground at the edge of town. The map is shaped less by rivers or hills than by the geometry of fields, small watercourses and straight rural roads meeting at the centre.
