Venëv is a small historic town in Tula Oblast, south of Moscow. On a map it shows the structure of many older Russian towns: a central square and main streets laid out in a fairly regular plan, a river valley curving along one side and quieter residential lanes spreading outward into gardens and fields.
The town's history reaches back several centuries, and its centre retains churches and older buildings that stand out in the modest townscape. Around the edges, the map loosens into private houses with long plots, typical of provincial central Russia.
