Vilankurichi lies on the northeastern side of Coimbatore, the large industrial city of western Tamil Nadu. On a map it reads as a place in transition. Older village lanes still run through it, and around them are newer residential layouts with their regular plots and cul-de-sacs, spreading into land that was farmed not long ago.
Coimbatore sits in a broad basin with the Western Ghats rising to the west, and the city is known for its textile mills, engineering works and chain of old irrigation tanks.
