Vimercate lies in the Brianza area north-east of Milan, and its streets are woven into the surrounding towns. At the centre, an older core of narrow streets and tight blocks keeps a fairly clear outline. Around it, broader residential areas and business districts spread outward, and a ring of main roads carries through traffic around the town.
The town's origins go back to Roman times, and its name is usually traced to Vicus Mercati, a market settlement. It remains an important local centre for eastern Brianza, with a historic centre that includes churches, villas and a medieval bridge. In more recent decades it has also become home to technology and business offices.
