Vinnamāla lies in southern Andhra Pradesh, inland from the Bay of Bengal and not far from the Tamil Nadu border. It is a place of modest size, and its map is shaped more by the land than by landmarks. Houses and lanes cluster at the centre, surrounded by fields divided by narrow roads and paths that follow property lines and water channels.
This part of the state is low and largely agricultural. Paddy and other crops depend on rainfall and on the small reservoirs, known locally as tanks, that are common across the region.
