Vīrnūr lies in western Tamil Nadu, in the agricultural country of the Kongu region, not far from the foothills that rise toward the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. From above, the town is a compact group of streets and houses, with roads leading out across a landscape of irrigated fields, coconut groves and scattered farmsteads.
Towns in this part of Tamil Nadu often combine a dense core of older streets with newer housing spreading along the main roads. Small tanks and canals used for irrigation are common features of the landscape, and they sometimes appear on the map as pale shapes and fine lines between the fields.
