Washuk lies in western Balochistan, in some of the driest and least populated country in Pakistan. The town is the headquarters of the district that shares its name. On a map it is a small settlement in a very large space: a short network of streets, a few main roads leading out, and then long stretches of land with almost nothing drawn on it.
That emptiness is the subject. In desert country, the lines that do show up matter more. Tracks head off towards distant settlements, and seasonal watercourses leave faint branching marks across the plain. The town's buildings and compounds gather close together, in contrast to the open ground around them.
