Watsonville sits in the Pajaro Valley, a few miles inland from Monterey Bay, where the valley opens toward the coast. The Pajaro River runs along the southern edge of the city and marks the county line. A network of sloughs, low wetland channels, winds through the western side. From above, the town is a compact block of streets surrounded on almost every side by farmland.
The valley is one of California's best-known growing areas, especially for strawberries, and apples were historically important too. The field pattern around the city is a big part of the map: long rectangular parcels, farm roads and irrigation lines fill the space between the town and the dunes by the bay. Downtown is laid out around a central plaza, a reminder of the town's early layout.
