Weidian is a town in Gansu province in north-western China, in the loess highlands of the upper Wei River basin. This is a landscape of soft, wind-deposited soil, carved by water into ridges, gullies and terraced slopes. Towns here tend to sit on the flatter valley floors, and Weidian follows that pattern.
From above, the built-up area is compact, with a main road and a handful of connecting streets that fill the available level ground. Around it, the land is divided into farm plots that follow the contours of the hills. The contrast between the town's straight lines and the curving terraces is a defining feature of the region.
