Westerville lies just northeast of Columbus, Ohio, where the suburban street pattern meets the valley of Alum Creek. The creek winds through the city from north to south, lined with parks and trails, and the Hoover Reservoir lies just to the east as a long, narrow sheet of water. Around them, curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs fill the map in soft, rounded shapes.
At the centre is Uptown, the historic core along State Street, a small grid of older blocks beside the campus of Otterbein University. Westerville has an unusual claim to fame. In the early twentieth century it was the headquarters of the Anti-Saloon League and became known as the Dry Capital of the World, a history now told in a museum at the public library.
A Westerville map poster shows the layers of a growing American town. The straight streets of Uptown give way to post-war neighbourhoods and newer loops, highways frame the edges, and green corridors follow the creek through the middle.
