Xinle is on the North China Plain in Hebei, north of Shijiazhuang. The land is almost perfectly flat, so the map reads like a drawing on a table. Straight roads run north-south and east-west, fields fill the rectangles between villages, and the town has grown outward in tidy blocks.
The main rail and road corridor between Beijing and southern China passes close by, and its long, straight lines are the strongest marks on the map. Local tradition links Xinle with Fuxi, one of the legendary founders of Chinese culture, and a terrace dedicated to him is one of the town's best-known sites.
