Xizhou lies on the plain north of central Taichung, in a part of Taiwan where towns, factories and farmland are tightly interwoven. From above, the area shows a fine mesh of streets with small parcels of fields between them, crossed by larger roads that connect it to the city and to neighbouring districts.
Central Taiwan's plains are among the most densely used landscapes in the country. Irrigation channels, narrow lanes and rail and road corridors run close together, and the map records all of them. Settlements are rarely separated by open space for long, which gives the area a continuous, textured appearance rather than clearly bounded towns.
