Yingpan is in the mountain country of northwest Yunnan, a region of steep ridges and deep river valleys running roughly north to south. In landscapes like this, the map is shaped more by terrain than by planning: flat ground is scarce, so streets, houses and fields gather wherever the valley floor or a gentle slope allows.
From above, the town forms an elongated shape, following the line of its valley and the road that runs through it. Buildings line the main route closely, with short side lanes climbing a little way up the slopes before stopping. Beyond that, the map falls quiet, suggesting the mountainsides that rise steeply on either side.
