Amersham in Buckinghamshire is really two places. Old Amersham lies in the valley of the River Misbourne. Its single broad high street is lined with timber-framed and Georgian buildings and anchored by the seventeenth-century Market Hall. When the railway arrived in 1892, it was built on the hill to the north, and a new town, Amersham-on-the-Hill, grew around the station.
The map makes that split unmistakable. In the valley, the old town is a long, narrow ribbon following the river and the road. Up on the hill, streets form the looser, curving pattern of an early twentieth-century suburb, part of the Metro-land expansion along the Metropolitan line. Amersham is still one of that line's termini, and wooded slopes separate the two halves.
An Amersham map poster also captures the Chiltern Hills around both settlements: chalk slopes, beech woods, dry valleys and winding lanes. The linear old town and the suburban hilltop give the print a clear structure, one that anyone who has walked between the two will recognise at once.

The railway town on the plateau above has a looser pattern of curving residential streets, laid out after the Metropolitan line arrived in 1892.
Wooded hillsides and open fields between the two halves of the town, and all around them, show the rolling chalk landscape of the Chilterns.
