Ardabīl sits on a high plateau in northwestern Iran, not far from the Caspian coast and the border with Azerbaijan. To the west rises the volcanic peak of Mount Sabalan, snow-capped for much of the year, and the city is known across Iran for its cold winters. The Balikhli Chay river runs through the city and gives the street pattern a natural line to follow.
The city is the ancestral home of the Safavid dynasty, which ruled Iran from the sixteenth century. At its heart stands the shrine of Sheikh Safi al-Din, the Sufi master from whom the dynasty descended. The complex of tombs, courtyards and prayer halls was listed by UNESCO in 2010. The famous Ardabil Carpet, now in London, was made for this shrine.

The river crosses the city and is bridged at intervals. Its soft, curving line through the grid ties older and newer neighbourhoods together.

Beyond the built-up area, flat highland stretches toward the mountains, leaving wide open space around the city's compact outline.
