Champigny-sur-Marne is in the Val-de-Marne department, a short distance east of Paris, beside one of the broad meanders the Marne makes before it joins the Seine. The town's name is tied to the Battle of Champigny, fought in the winter of 1870 during the Siege of Paris, when French troops tried to break through the Prussian lines on these slopes.
