Didcot grew from a small village into a town because of the railway. When the Great Western line arrived in the nineteenth century and the branch to Oxford joined it here, Didcot became a junction, and the map still shows it. The main line cuts east to west through the town, with the station and its sidings at the centre and housing spreading out on both sides.
For decades the most visible landmark was Didcot power station, whose cooling towers could be seen across the Thames Valley until they were demolished in stages from 2014. Today the town is known for the Didcot Railway Centre beside the station, which preserves Great Western locomotives, and for rapid growth: large estates such as Great Western Park have added whole districts of curved residential streets to the west.
A Didcot map poster shows how that growth fits together. The older terraces near the Broadway sit in a tighter grid, the railway lands form a long band of parallel lines, and the newer estates loop outward in cul-de-sacs and crescents. Beyond them lie open fields of the vale, with the Downs rising to the south.
The Great Western main line and the branch toward Oxford meet here, drawing a wide band of track and sidings across the middle of the town.
Beside the station, the Didcot Railway Centre occupies the old engine shed site, a fenced strip of lines and buildings set directly within the railway corridor.
Great Western Park and other recent developments add loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs to the west, a looser pattern that contrasts with the straighter streets of the older town.

Cur Didcot
Didcot is where many people have settled for work in Oxford, at Harwell or in London, and a map of the town is a quiet record of that move. It suits a first home in one of the new estates as much as a family that has lived near the station for generations.
Add your own title, a subtitle such as the year you moved, and the coordinates line, then choose Classic, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits a railway town well. Files cost $9 and cover six print sizes, each as a watermark-free PNG and PDF.
