Dingxi lies on the Loess Plateau in Gansu Province, south-east of Lanzhou. From above, the landscape is the strongest feature. Deeply eroded hills surround the city, and the built-up area follows the valley floor, where the flat ground allows roads, housing and a railway to run side by side.
The region is dry, and much of the farming on the surrounding slopes takes place on terraces cut into the loess. Dingxi is widely known in China for its potatoes, which grow well in these conditions and have become an important part of the local economy.

Eroded hills rise on both sides of the city. On the map the street network stops where they begin, leaving wide open space around the urban area.
