Gijón faces the Cantabrian Sea, and its coastline gives the map a strong, clean edge. The long, gentle curve of San Lorenzo beach runs east from the centre. To its west, the small peninsula of Cimadevilla, the old fishing quarter, pushes out into the water. Beyond that lies the marina, then the harbour works and the large port of El Musel further west.
At the tip of Cimadevilla, the Cerro de Santa Catalina is a grassy headland park. It holds Eduardo Chillida's large concrete sculpture Elogio del Horizonte, which has become a symbol of the city. Inland, the nineteenth- and twentieth-century expansion grew as a fairly regular grid, and the green valley of the Piles river meets the sea at the eastern end of the beach.

Cimadevilla headland
The old fishing quarter occupies a small peninsula between the beach and the marina. It is a tight knot of lanes capped by the open park of Santa Catalina.
El Musel port
To the west, long breakwaters and docks form angular shapes in the sea. They contrast sharply with the softer residential coastline further east.
