Valley-floor layout
The town stretches along the bottom of its valley, a linear shape set by the surrounding hills rather than by a planned grid.

Gongmen Map Poster & Print
Gongmen is a town in eastern Gansu, in the hill country where the Loess Plateau breaks into ridges and deep valleys. Terrain shapes almost everything here. Seen from above, the built-up area follows the lowest ground, stretching along a valley rather than spreading evenly, and the roads trace the same line as the watercourses they run beside.
The slopes around the town are covered in the terraced fields typical of the loess region. On a detailed map, they show up as fine, curving lines that follow the contours around each hillside. They give the landscape an almost topographic look, even when no elevation is drawn.
This is a working rural landscape, and the town serves the farming villages scattered along the side valleys. A Gongmen map poster suits anyone who knows the place: a compact settlement strung along the valley floor, with winding roads and hillside terraces spreading out in every direction.

Loess terraces
The hillsides are shaped into farm terraces that follow the contours. They add fine, rippling lines to the land around the town.
Winding roads
Roads follow streams and ridges, bending often as they link Gongmen with neighbouring valleys. They trace the terrain across the whole map.
