Market square towers
The central square with its five towers anchors the old town. It is surrounded by dense, irregular streets that reflect Halle's long history as a salt-trading town.

Halle lies on the Saale in Saxony-Anhalt. West of the city, the river splits into several arms that wind through meadows and islands. The historic centre sits just east of the water: a compact oval of streets around the market square, ringed by roads that follow the line of the former walls.
The market square is known for its five towers, the four spires of the Marktkirche and the freestanding Red Tower. George Frideric Handel was born here in 1685, and the Martin Luther University, one of the oldest in Germany, shapes much of the centre. Across the river, Halle-Neustadt was built from the 1960s as a new town of large residential blocks.
A Halle (Saale) map poster captures the contrast between these two worlds: the fine medieval grain of the old town and the wide geometric blocks of Neustadt, with the river's many channels running between them. Giebichenstein Castle overlooks the Saale to the north, and the floodplain gives the whole design a natural centre line.
The central square with its five towers anchors the old town. It is surrounded by dense, irregular streets that reflect Halle's long history as a salt-trading town.
The Saale divides into several branches west of the centre. They enclose islands and meadows that appear on the map as a soft, braided band.
The planned new town across the river is laid out in large residential blocks and broad roads. It is one of the most recognisable modernist town plans in eastern Germany.
