Mosbach sits where the Elz valley opens toward the Neckar, on the southern edge of the Odenwald. From above, the old town forms a compact, irregular core of narrow streets around the market square. Newer districts then spread along the valley, and Neckarelz extends down to the river itself.

The town is known for its well-preserved half-timbered buildings, especially the Palm'sches Haus on the market square, an elaborate timber-framed house dating from the early seventeenth century. Mosbach is also the administrative seat of the Neckar-Odenwald district, and a regional centre for this stretch of the Neckar valley.

A Mosbach map poster shows that combination clearly. The dense medieval centre, the long, narrow valley, the broad curve of the Neckar and the forested slopes on either side all appear on it. The layout is elongated and natural, following the water rather than a planned grid.

Old town core

A tight cluster of winding medieval streets around the market square forms the densest and most intricate part of the map.

02

Elz valley

The town stretches along the narrow Elz valley, with its streets and railway following the small river toward the Neckar.

03

Neckar river

At Neckarelz, the map opens onto the wide Neckar, whose broad curve adds a strong, flowing line along one edge of the composition.
