Contour-following roads
The main roads bend and switch back as they follow the ridgelines and hillsides, forming long curving strokes that give the map its overall structure.

Nongthymmai Map Poster & Print
Nongthymmai is part of the wider Shillong urban area in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, in northeast India. The Shillong plateau sits at around 1,500 metres, and the ground here is never flat for long. On a map, you can see this straight away: the roads don't form a grid but follow the contours of the land, looping round spurs and dropping into small valleys.
Seen from above, the area is closely built. Narrow lanes branch off the main roads and wind down the slopes, many of them ending in footpaths or short dead ends. There are few straight lines. The street pattern comes from a hill town that grew gradually, house by house, rather than to a plan.
A Nongthymmai map poster shows this as a dense, organic web of lines, closer to a leaf's veins or a river delta than to a planned city. Printed in black and white, the curving roads and the tight clusters of small streets make an intricate pattern with no single centre, which suits the character of a residential hill neighbourhood.

Dense lane network
Between the main roads, a fine mesh of lanes and paths fills the slopes, creating the most detailed and textured parts of the print.
Part of greater Shillong
The neighbourhood's streets run into those of the surrounding city with no clear break, so the map reads as one section of a larger hill settlement.

Tabula quae aliquid significat
For people from Shillong, or who have lived there, Nongthymmai is a specific corner of a city that is often shown only as a whole. A map of the neighbourhood makes home recognisable at street level, winding roads included.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed to a family name, a locality or a meaningful date. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Digital HD files cost $9, and a free watermarked preview is available first.
