Valley setting
The town lies on a valley floor between hills, so its streets run in long lines following the lowest ground rather than a square grid.

Tianchang is the seat of Jingxing County in Hebei province, lying west of the provincial capital Shijiazhuang where the North China Plain gives way to the Taihang Mountains. The town occupies a valley floor, and from above its streets follow the shape of the terrain, stretched along the lowest ground with the hills rising on either side.
The Jingxing area has long been a passage between the plain and the uplands to the west, and it is known in Chinese history as the site of a famous battle fought by the general Han Xin in the Han dynasty era. On a map, roads and a railway thread through the valleys, while terraced slopes and scattered villages occupy the ground above.
A Tianchang map poster shows a town defined by its landscape more than by any single monument. The linear town plan, the valley routes and the fine contour of the surrounding hills make a composition with strong direction and depth, and in black and white it gives a clear, quiet image of a mountain county town in northern China.
