D'Kaart
Nishiwaki sits in the interior of Hyōgo Prefecture, where the Kako River runs south through a narrow basin toward the Harima plain and the Inland Sea. On a map the town reads as a band of streets pressed between the water and steep forested ridges, with houses and workshops following the valley floor and thinning quickly wherever the slopes begin.
The town is known across Japan as the navel of the country, because the 135° east meridian, which sets Japan Standard Time, crosses the 35° north parallel within its boundaries. That invisible intersection gives the plain grid of lines on any map a quiet extra meaning here, and it is a detail many residents like to point out to visitors.
Nishiwaki is also the centre of Banshū-ori, a yarn-dyed cotton weaving tradition that has shaped the town's small factories and back streets for generations. A Nishiwaki map poster keeps that working texture: short lanes, river bends, rail lines and the dense contour of hills, all rendered in fine black lines that suit a room with clean, simple furnishings.
The Kako River is the spine of the map, curving through the basin with roads and rail running alongside it and small bridges stitching the two banks of the town together.
The point where 135° east meets 35° north lies within the city, a geographic curiosity that has earned Nishiwaki its nickname as the navel of Japan.
Steep wooded hills close in on every side, so the built area appears as a compact, irregular shape with long fingers of streets reaching up the side valleys.

People hang this map because they grew up in the valley, worked in its textile trade, or simply like owning a print of the place Japan calls its centre. The layout is modest and quiet, which is exactly why it works so well on a wall.
You can personalise the title, add a date or family name in the subtitle, and edit the coordinates line, perhaps to 135° E, 35° N. Choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
