From above, the town stretches along the river instead of gathering around a single centre. Roads run parallel to the water, and short streets branch off between houses and gardens.
The area has long been known for its date palm groves. Small creeks and irrigation channels leave the Shatt al-Arab and run inland, feeding the orchards and dividing the land into long, narrow plots.
