Medieval core
The old centre is a tight cluster of crooked streets and small squares. Its fine lines contrast with the straighter roads built around it later.

The map
Alençon Map Poster & Print
Alençon is the prefecture of the Orne department in Normandy and grew up where the Briante meets the Sarthe. On a map, the historic centre is a compact oval of narrow, irregular streets, with the river curving past the old town. Around it, wider boulevards follow the line of the old fortifications. Beyond them, the town spreads more loosely toward the wooded hills of the Normandie-Maine regional park.
The town gave its name to point d'Alençon, a needle lace so fine it came to be called the queen of lace. In 2010 the craft was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Alençon is also the birthplace of Thérèse Martin, later Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, whose family home still stands in the centre. The castle of the dukes, with its sturdy towers, marks the edge of the old town.
An Alençon map poster brings out the contrast between the dense medieval core and the calm curves of river water around it. The Sarthe adds movement to the composition. The ring of boulevards gives the old town a clear outline, almost like a drawing of a walled city. It is a refined, understated subject, well matched to the town's reputation for fine handwork.

The Sarthe and Briante
Two rivers meet here, and the Sarthe's bends through the town add soft curves and pale water to a map otherwise dense with streets.
Ring of boulevards
Wide roads follow the route of the former defences, forming a near-continuous loop that separates the historic centre from the later districts.

Why Alençon
A map that means something
Alençon draws lace makers, pilgrims and people with family roots in the Orne, and a map suits all of them. It is a quiet way to mark a connection to Normandy without resorting to landscapes or tourist imagery.
Personalise the title with the town's name, a family name or a date, then adjust the subtitle and coordinates. Choose from Classic, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the 300 DPI files for $9 and print them locally, or order a matte poster, framed if you wish.
