Fagus Factory
Gropius's factory complex sits beside the railway at the edge of town. Its long, orderly buildings make a clear geometric shape and connect the map to the origins of modern design.

The map
Alfeld Map Poster & Print
Alfeld lies in southern Lower Saxony, in the valley of the Leine river. Wooded ranges rise on both sides. On a map, the town stretches along the valley floor. The river winds through meadows, and the railway runs parallel to it. The old town is compact, with irregular streets, and later districts fill the valley and climb the lower slopes.
Alfeld is best known for the Fagus Factory, which Walter Gropius designed from 1911 onward. It is widely considered one of the first buildings of modern architecture, and it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. It stands next to the railway line on the western edge of town, and its long, rectangular plan is easy to pick out on a detailed map.
An Alfeld map poster brings together the river, the rail line, the medieval centre and the factory site in one frame. On both sides, the blank space of the hills sets them off. It is a well-structured composition and a natural choice for anyone interested in architecture, or for people who grew up in the Leine valley.

Leine river
The Leine winds through meadows on the valley floor next to the town. It is the main natural line on the poster and runs roughly parallel to the railway.
Valley between hills
Wooded hills close in on both sides, leaving the town in a band along the valley. This gives the map a strong direction and plenty of calm space.
