The map
Almenara Map Poster & Print
Almenara stands on the Jequitinhonha River in the far northeast of Minas Gerais, not far from the Bahia border. The river is the dominant line on any map of the town, a broad curve with the urban area pressed against its bank and the streets arranged to meet it.
The Jequitinhonha Valley is known as one of Brazil's most distinctive cultural regions, with a strong tradition of handicrafts, pottery and music. Almenara functions as a regional centre for the lower part of the valley, and its layout reflects that role, with a busy commercial core and roads leading out towards smaller towns.
An Almenara map poster places the river at the centre of the composition. The meeting of water and grid, the bridge crossing and the thinning streets towards the hills give the print a clear sense of place, even for someone seeing it for the first time.
