It grew around devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida, whose small statue, by tradition, was found in the river by fishermen in 1717. Today the town is Brazil's most important pilgrimage destination.
The Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, one of the largest Catholic churches in the world, dominates the town.
