Apicum-Açu is a municipality on the northern coast of Maranhão, in a part of Brazil where the coast is broken into estuaries, mangroves and low islands. Tidal channels wind through the mangrove, small islands sit offshore, and the town itself occupies a patch of firmer ground among the waterways.
