Araraquara lies in the interior of São Paulo state, on gently rolling land given over to citrus and sugarcane. Locals call it the Morada do Sol, the home of the sun, a nickname that reflects its warm climate. In literature, Araraquara is remembered as the place where Mário de Andrade wrote the first version of Macunaíma in 1926, while staying at a farm outside the city.
