Armentières lies in the far north of France on the River Lys, which marks the Belgian border just outside town. The river runs along the northern side of the centre, and canals, old channels and waterside parks follow its course. The town was almost completely destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in the 1920s, which is why its centre looks so consistent.
